Brackets in first name

[edit]

@Sgconlaw: Why are there brackets in Cudworth's first name ("R[alph]")? Chealer (talk) 15:30, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Chealer: because his full name does not appear in the work. It is indicated as R. Cudworth. — Sgconlaw (talk) 15:58, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. So there is a reasonable doubt that the author is not Ralph Cudworth? Even if the English Wikipedia attributes it to him? Chealer (talk) 17:21, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Chealer: I don’t think there’s any doubt, but it is an editorial interpolation because the full name isn’t set out in the work, hence the use of brackets. — Sgconlaw (talk) 23:10, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I fail to see what difference it makes that his name is not written canonically in the work, but I realize that RQ templates are quite unclear to me. I brought the issue to our page about quotations. Chealer (talk) 00:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
