Template for Finnish index links
[edit]I created an experimental template for linking articles to the Finnish index. It seems to work (see letti) except that the letter in the text is in lower case. I'm not sure if it's a great idea (I'd remove the underscore from the template name, though). This would still require updaters to add manually the template to articles, and the word to the appropriate index. Not to mention the adding to words to the index... | hyark 19:48, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- What is the Finnish index? If it is what I think, id est an index listing all Finnish entries in the English Wiktionary, than it should be deleted, since it is about as useless as categories English nouns, English adjectives, etc. Ncik 27 Apr 2005
- Ncik, there are indices for various languages (there is a link to the list of indices on the main page). They are all far from complete (the French one, I believe, lists all the headwords in one of the most popular French abridged dictionaries), but if we were to make them as complete as possible, they would be a lot more useful (probably more so than the categories). I don't think that deleting them would be helpful in any way. — Paul G 10:01, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Pointless. --Yair rand (talk) 04:31, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- Is it? Why? It links from individual entries to the Finnish index. Mglovesfun (talk) 04:36, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- A real solution would be general enough to work for all languages and not require entry-level input. We don't want language-specific templates especially because of the amount of editing required to keep coverage complete. It should be done with JS, maybe by adding it to nearbypages. For further thoughts, see User talk:Conrad.Irwin/¹#Linking to indexes. There's also
{{Estonian index}}
which should follow the same course. --Bequw → τ 04:44, 8 September 2010 (UTC)- So it's not pointless, but yes if there were a template to replace it I'd be happy with that. I don't favor orphaning it, as opposed to replacing it with a better template. Mglovesfun (talk) 04:55, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- Kept (note I moved it back to
{{Finnish index}}
because Finnish is always capitalized with this meaning. There's been discussion of a template to supersede Finnish index and Estonian index, but since no such template exists I consider this an easy pass, either per the discussion or that the proposed solution hasn't been implemented.
