This template is for Arabic relative nouns (nisba), which take the suffix -iyy- to create a noun derived from a nisba adjective (an adjective meaning "relating to X" where X is the suffixed noun). See also {{ar-nisba}}
, {{ar-etym-noun-nisba}}
, and {{ar-etym-nisba}}
.
Using this template automatically adds the page to Category:Arabic relative nouns (nisba).
Please note that the pronunciation of borrowed nouns, and hence nisba nouns, often doesn't match their spelling, in that short vowels are often spelled as long vowels to aid in pronunciation. Furthermore, pronunciation of borrowed nouns often includes short and long e and o, which cannot be indicated using diacritics. Hence, it may not be possible to adequately specify the pronunciation of a borrowed noun using vowel diacritics, and it may also be necessary to explicitly specify a transliteration. All these considerations apply to nisba nouns as well. An example is ديموقراطي dimuqrāṭiyy "democrat", where short i and u are spelled with long vowels.
Parameters
[edit]|1=
indicate diacritic marks EXCEPT for final tanwin "un". This will automatically add diacritics for feminine and plural forms.|tr=
transliteration (see Wiktionary:About Arabic#Romanization). Not usually necessary if diacritics are present in|1=
, as it will be automatically determined from|1=
— but see above about borrowed words. If not present, and diacritics aren't present in|1=
, then the word will be added to the category Category:Requests for transliteration of Arabic terms.|pl=
(optional) overrides the plural for entries such as عَرَبِيّ (ʕarabiyy). Should include diacritics.|pl2=
(optional) second plural. If equal to +, supply the normal nisba plural (ending in -ūn). If|pl2=
is given,|pl=
must also be given; use|pl=+
to request a regular first plural.|pltr=
transliteration of overridden plural. Not usually necessary if diacritics are present in|pl=
. Same concerns apply as for|tr=
.|pl2tr=
transliteration of second overridden plural. Not usually necessary if diacritics are present in|pl2=
. Same concerns apply as for|tr=
.
With |1=
and optionally |tr=
, feminine and plural forms will be handled automagically.
|tr=
should not be used to show stress, given the somewhat variable nature of Arabic rules regarding which syllable carries stress.
