Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from Thomas Hobbes' English translation (the first thereof) of Thucydides' work History of the Peloponnesian War entitled Eight Bookes of the Peloponnesian Warre (1634); this is a reprint of the 1st edition (London: [] [Eliot’s Court Press] for Hen[ry] Seile, [], 1629; →OCLC) which is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the following chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epistle Dedicatory To the Right Honourable, Sir William Cavendysshe, []
Names The Names of the Places of Greece Occurring in Thucydides, or in the Mappe of Greece, []
Thucydides Of the Life and History of Thucydides
To the Readers To the Readers
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the website to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/eightbookesofpel00thucuoft/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8.
  • |entry=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from "The Names of the Places of Greece Occurring in Thucydides, or in the Mappe of Greece", use this parameter to specify the entry name.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the book (1st–8th) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

Page 535 of the work is incorrectly numbered as 536; the text is unaffected. If quoting from this page, specify |page=536.

  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
