Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I or |volume=II.
  • |author= – the author of a title other than Temple.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the title of the work quoted from and the publication date, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • Volume I: Although pages 3–6 are not indicated, specify them as |page=3 to |page=6.
  • Volume II:
    • Although pages 1 and 2 are not indicated, specify them as |page=1 and |page=2.
    • Page numbers 268–280 are not used; the text is unaffected.
  • |chapter= (and |chaptername=) –
    • If quoting from "Some Account of the Life and Writings of Sir William Temple, Bart." in volume I, specify |chapter=Life. As this chapter is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/worksofsirwillia01temp/page/n10/mode/1up, specify |page=10.
    • If quoting from page 78 in volume II, if quoting from "The Triple Alliance Copy’d from the Original Papers" specify |chapter=Triple Alliance, and if quoting from "Separate Articles, which Shall be of the Same Force and Authority, as if They had been Inserted in the Treaty Concluded this Day, between the King of Great Britain, and the States General of the United Netherlands" specify |chapter=Separate Articles.
    • If a title is divided into chapters, use |chapter= to specify the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chaptername= the name of the chapter.
  • |date=, or (|month= and) |year= – if a part of a title quoted from (for example, a letter) is dated, use |date= to specify the date in the format 6 September 1665 or September 6, 1665. The date will be converted from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. If only the month and year, or year alone, is known, use |month= and/or |year= to specify this information.
  • |section= – if a title is divided into sections, the section number quoted from, followed by the name of the section in parentheses.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
