Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Jonathan Swift's work A Tale of a Tub (1st edition, 1704). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – If quoting from a chapter indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result First page number
The Bookseller to the Reader The Bookseller to the Reader unnumbered page
Dedication To the Right Honourable, John Lord Sommers unnumbered page
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=VNROAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP11, specify |page=11.
  • |1= or |section= – the main part of the work is divided into sections instead of chapters. Use this parameter to specify the section number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals. If quoting from a part of the work indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result First page number
Battel A Full and True Account of the Battel Fought Last Friday, between the Antient and the Modern Books in St. James’s Library page 223
Discourse A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit. In a Letter to a Friend. A Fragment. page 279
  • |sectionname= – the name of the section quoted from, if any.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
