Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Edward Stillingfleet's work A Discourse Concerning the Idolatry Practised in the Church of Rome (2nd edition, 1671; and 1676 edition); the 1st edition published in the same year as the 2nd edition (London: [] Robert White, for Henry Mortlock [], 1671; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

2nd edition (1671)
  • |1= or |chapter= – if quoting from the preface or the contents:
    • Specify |chapter=The Preface or |chapter=The Contents.
    • As those chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the Google Books "page number" assigned to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=H3tjAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP15, specify |page=15.
1676 edition
  • |year=mandatory: if quoting from the 1676 edition, specify |year=1676.
  • |1= or |chapter= – if quoting from the epistle dedicatory or "To the Reader":
    • Specify |chapter=Epistle Dedicatory or |chapter=To the Reader.
    • As those chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the Google Books "page number" assigned to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=4rJoAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA5, specify |page=5.
If quoting from the main part of the work, if the page number is specified the template will determine the name of the chapter and the part (I or II) quoted from.
Both editions
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
  • |section= – the section number quoted from in Arabic numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
