Usage

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to format quotations from Edmund Spenser's work A View of the Present State of Ireland. Completed in 1596, the work was published posthumously only in 1633 by the antiquarian James Ware in The Historie of Ireland, Collected by Three Learned Authors viz. Meredith Hanmer Doctor in Divinitie: Edmund Campion Sometime Fellow of St Iohns Colledge in Oxford: and Edmund Spenser Esq (London: […] Societie of Stationers, […], 1633; →OCLC). As the original printing of the work is not currently available online, this template can be used to create a link to one of the following online versions of these works at Google Books, the HathiTrust Digital Library, and the Internet Archive, respectively:

• 1809 version of the 1st edition (1633).
• 1715 edition, in The Works of Mr. Edmund Spenser, volume VI.
• 1763 edition (archived at the Internet Archive).

Note that the online version of the 1763 edition is missing pages 161–163, and so the corresponding pages in the 1809 edition (199–202) should be used instead.

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |year= – mandatory in some cases: use this parameter as follows:
  • |year=1715 – to link to the 1715 edition of the work.
  • |year=1763 – to link to the 1763 edition of the work.
  • |year=1809 – to link to the 1809 version of the 1st edition (1633) of the work.

If this parameter is omitted, the template links to the 1809 version.

• |chapter= – if quoting from:
  • "The Life of Mr. Edmund Spenser" in the 1763 edition, specify |chapter=Life;
  • the preface in the 1809 version, specify |chapter=Preface.
• |1= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals as the case may be. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
  • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
