Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from James Shirley's work The Coronation (1st edition, 1640); the work is incorrectly attributed to John Fletcher on the title page. It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from the prologue or epilogue, specify |chapter=Prologue or |chapter=Epilogue.
  • |1= or |page=} – mandatory: as the work is unpaginated, use this parameter to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive ("IA") to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/coronationcomedy00shir/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8. This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases the template will determine the act number quoted from if the IA page number is specified. However, the template is unable to do so if page 43 or 59 is quoted from, in which case the act number must be manually specified in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=III.
Act I
IA pages 8–18
Act II
IA pages 19–31
Act III
IA pages 32–43
Act IV
IA pages 43–59
Act V
IA pages 59–74
  • |scene= – scene numbers are not clearly indicated in the work. However, this parameter may be used to specify the scene number quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals when ascertained from a later version of the work, such as The Dramatic Works and Poems of James Shirley (1833, volume III).
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
