Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Thomas Shadwell's work The Volunteers: or The Stock-jobbers (1st edition, 1693). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epilogue The Epilogue, Spoken by One in Deep Mourning
Prologue A Prologue, Written by Mr. Shadwell, and Designed to be Spoken, but was Lost when the Play was Acted
Prologue 2 Prologue, Written by Mr. Durfey [i.e., Thomas d'Urfey], and Spoken of by Mrs. [Anne] Bracegirdle
To the Queen To the Queen [Anne, Queen of Great Britain] (by Anne Shadwell)
As the dedication to the queen is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/volunteersorstoc00shad/page/n6/mode/1up, specify |page=6. (The other chapters are also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL.)
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, the template can determine the act number quoted from if the page number is specified. However, it is unable to do so if page 13 or 47 is specified, in which case this parameter must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Act I
pages 1–13
Act II
pages 13–24
Act III
pages 25–34
Act IV
pages 35–47
Act V
pages 47–56
  • |scene=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, the template can determine the scene number quoted from if the page number is specified. If it is unable to do so, use this parameter specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, like this: |scene=i.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
