Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from collections of Robert Sanderson's sermons (new edition, 1632; and 5th edition, 1671); the 1st edition (Ten Sermons, []. London: [] [R. Young] for R[obert] Dawlman, [], 1627; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

New edition (1632)
  • |1= or |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Advertisement An Advertisement to the Reader
Epistle Dedicatorie To the Right Reverend Father in God, George, Lord Bishop of London, My Singular Good Lord
Some Advertisements Some Advertisements to the Reader
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=t7poAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA5, specify |page=5.
  • |section= – the section number quoted from, which is indicated in the margin.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have template determine the chapter quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

Page numbers 152–161 are not used by the work; the text is unaffected.

5th edition (1671)
  • |edition=mandatory: if quoting from the 5th edition (1671), specify |edition=5th. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the new edition (1632).
  • |part=mandatory in some cases:
    • If quoting from the part of the work called "XXI Sermons", specify |part=XXI Sermons.
    • If quoting from the last sermon appearing at the end of the work, specify |part=Ad Clerum.
The pagination of the work restarts from 1 in these parts.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the two prefaces, specify |chapter=Preface. As the prefaces are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=uV89AQAAMAAJ&pg=PP11, specify |page=11.
  • |date=, or |month= and/or |year= – if the date of the sermon quoted from according to the Julian calendar is indicated in the work, specify it using |date=. The template will convert it to a date in the Gregorian calendar. If only the month and year are, or year alone is, known, specify them or it using |month= and/or |year=.
  • |para= or |paragraph= – the paragraph number quoted from, which is indicated in the margin.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have template determine the part of the work quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
Both editions
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the book.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
