This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Antoine Pyron du Martre's work The Elements of Heraldry (1st edition, 1765). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |article= and |articlename=, and/or |section= – some chapters of the main part of the work are divided into articles and/or sections. Use |article= and |articlename= to specify the article number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and the name of the article, respectively; use |section= to specify the section number in uppercase Roman numerals, followed by the name of the section in parentheses: see the example below.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the name of the chapter quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

Page 8 of the work is missing. Update the template with a better version of the work when one becomes available.

  • |entry= – if quoting from the "Dictionary of the Technical Terms" at the end of the work, use this parameter to specify the name of the entry quoted from. The entry name will be displayed in small capital letters as in the work; to format it differently using wikitext, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes. As the "Dictionary" is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com.sg/books?id=LyYIAAAAQAAJ&pg=PT4, specify |page=4.
  • |column= or |columns= – if quoting from the "Dictionary", the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
