This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Nathaniel Hawthorne's work The Dolliver Romance, and Other Pieces (1st edition, 1876). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work (contents) at Google Books.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1=, |chapter=, or |story=mandatory: the name of the chapter or story quoted from. If the parameter is given the value indicated in the first column of the following table, the template will display what is indicated in the second column:
Parameter value Result First page number
The Dolliver Romance
A Scene from the Dolliver Romance A Scene from the Dolliver Romance page 9
Tales and Sketches
Solitary Man Fragments from the Journal of a Solitary Man (first published in the American Monthly Magazine, July 1838) page 77
For help with adding other stories or dates of publication or writing, or linking English Wikipedia articles to the template, leave a message on the talk page or at "Wiktionary:Grease pit".
  • |section= – the section number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals and, if applicable, the name of the section in parentheses following the number (see the example below).
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine the part of the work quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
