Usage

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote an English translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's works Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil. (Faust. The First Part of the Tragedy., 1808) and Faust. Der Tragödie zweiter Teil in fünf Akten (Faust. The Second Part of the Tragedy in Five Acts., 1832) entitled Faust: A Tragedy (1st edition, 1871) by Bayard Taylor. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

• 1st part (archived at the Internet Archive).
• 2nd part (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |1=, |part=, or |volume= – mandatory: the "volume" or part number quoted from in Arabic numerals, either |part=1 or |part=2.
• |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
• |2= or |scene=, and |scenename= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the main part of the work, use |2= or |scene= to specify the scene number quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals, and |scenename= the name of the scene.
• |3= or |page=; or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
  • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in the 2nd part, the act number quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.

• |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
