Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Thomas Fuller’s work Good Thoughts in Worse Times (1st edition, 1647). The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |sig= or |signature=, and |verso=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the preface, the signature number quoted from, from |sig=A4 to |sig=A8; as only A4 is indicated in the work, the template encloses others within square brackets. If quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1 or |verso=yes; if |verso= is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted. When quoting a range of signatures, note the following:
    • Use |sig= or |signature=, and |verso=, to specify the signature at the start of the range, and |sigend= or |signatureend=, and |versoend=, (if required) to specify the signature at the end of the range.
    • You must also use |sigref= or |signatureref= to specify the signature number that the template should link to (usually the signature on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |1= or |section= – if quoting from the main part of the work, the section number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals. The template adds the section name within brackets automatically. Note the following:
Chapters “Personall Meditations”, “Scripture Observations”, and “Meditations on the Times” use IIII, whereas “Meditations on all Kind of Prayers” and “Occasional Meditations” use IV.
All chapters except “Occasional Meditations” (where it is incorrect; see below) use XIIII instead of XIV.
The chapter “Personall Meditations” uses 17 instead of XVII; specify |section=17.
In the chapters “Scripture Observations”, “Meditations on the Times”, and “Meditations on all Kind of Prayers”, section XIX is indicated as XX; specify |section=XX; the template adds “XIX”, the correct number, within square brackets.
In the chapter “Occasional Meditations”, sections XIII, XIIII, XV, XVI, and XVII are indicated as XIV, XV, XVIII, XIX, and XX, respectively; specify the number indicated in the work; the template adds the correct number within square brackets.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the main part of the work, the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the chapter of the work quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
The last page, 236, is incorrectly indicated as a second 235; specify |page=236; the template encloses it within square brackets.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
