Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Arthur Conan Doyle's work His Last Bow (1st (British) edition; and 1st American edition, 1917). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Chapter or short story First page number

The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge (15 August 1908) page 11
The Adventure of the Cardboard Box (January 1893) page 62

The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot (December 1910) page 205

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 1st American edition, specify |edition=US. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st (British) edition (1917).
  • |part= and |partname= – if a short story is divided into parts, use |part= to specify the part number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and |partname= the name of the part.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the name of the chapter or short story quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
