Usage
[edit]This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from a collection of John Donne's sermons (1st edition, 1st volume, 1640; 2nd volume, 1649; 3rd volume, 1661). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:
- 1st volume: LXXX Sermons Preached by that Learned and Reverend Divine Iohn Donne (1640) [not currently available online].
- 2nd volume: Fifty Sermons, Preached by that Learned and Reverend Divine, John Donne (1649).
- 3rd volume: XXVI. Sermons (Never before Publish’d) Preached by that Learned and Reverend Divine John Donne (1661; archived at the Internet Archive).
As the 1st volume is not currently available online, use {{RQ:Donne Works}}
to quote from sermons published in it.
Parameters
[edit]The template takes the following parameters:
|1=
or|volume=
– mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 2nd volume (1st edition, 1649) or 3rd volume (1st edition, 1661), specify|volume=2
or|volume=3
respectively. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st volume (1st edition, 1640).|2=
,|chapter=
, or|sermon=
– mandatory: the name of the chapter or sermon quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value specified in the first column:
Parameter value | Result |
---|---|
2nd volume (1st edition, 1649) | |
*Epistle Dedicatory 2A | To the Right Honourable Basil Earl of Denby [i.e., Basil Feilding, 2nd Earl of Denbigh], My Very Good Lord and Patron |

- As the chapters above marked with an asterisk (*) are unpaginated, use
|3=
or|page=
to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books or the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://books.google.com/books?id=2PdiAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP7
specify|page=7
, and if it ishttps://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_fifty-sermons-preached-_donne-john_1649/page/n2/mode/1up
specify|page=2
. (The other chapters are also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL.)
|date=
– the date of the sermon quoted from according to the Julian calendar. The template will convert it to a date in the Gregorian calendar.|3=
or|page=
, or|pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
. - You must also use
|pageref=
to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this:
- You must specify this information to have the template link to an online version of the work.
In the 2nd volume, page numbers 290–299 are not used; the text is unaffected.
|3=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
