Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s work Two Years before the Mast (1st edition, 1840; and UK edition, 1841). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the UK edition (1841), specify |edition=UK.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

The 1st edition (1840) is a highly imperfect copy; the following pages are missing: 357, 361, 363, 366, 372, 374, 377, 378, 380, 381, 384, 387, 388, 390, 398, 401, 405, 413, 419, 420, 425, 429, 431, 437, 438, 441–443, 445, 449, 451, 456, 458, and 461. Replace the file if a better copy becomes available. In the meantime, use the UK edition (1841) if quoting from text missing from this version of the 1st edition.

  • |column= or |columns= – if quoting from the UK edition, the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
