Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections, and on talk pages, to cite Asa Gray's work First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology (1st edition, 1857). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |entry= – if citing from the glossary, use this parameter to specify the name of the entry cited. By default, the template capitalizes the first letter of the entry as this is how it appears in the work. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes. If |entry= is omitted, the name of the Wiktionary entry is used as a default.
  • |chapter=, and |lesson= – if citing from the main part of the work, use |lesson= to specify the lesson number in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chapter= the name of the chapter or lesson. If citing from other parts of the work (such as the preface), use |chapter= to specify the name of the chapter.
  • |para= or |paragraph= – if citing from the main part of the work, the paragraph number in Arabic numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=iii–iv.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3= or |passage= – a passage quoted from the webpage.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.

Examples

[edit]
  • Wikitext:
    • {{R:Gray Botany|page=219|passage=leaning or resting on; the cotyledons are incumbent when the back of one of them lies against the radicle; the anthers are incumbent when turned or looking inwards}} (assuming the template is used in the incumbent entry); or
    • {{R:Gray Botany|entry=Incumbent|page=219|passage=leaning or resting on; the cotyledons are incumbent when the back of one of them lies against the radicle; the anthers are incumbent when turned or looking inwards}}; or
    • {{R:Gray Botany|Incumbent|219|leaning or resting on; the cotyledons are incumbent when the back of one of them lies against the radicle; the anthers are incumbent when turned or looking inwards}}
  • Result: Asa Gray (1857) “[Glossary [].] Incumbent.”, in First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology, [], New York, N.Y.: Ivison & Phinney and G[eorge] P[almer] Putnam & Co., [], →OCLC, page 219:leaning or resting on; the cotyledons are incumbent when the back of one of them lies against the radicle; the anthers are incumbent when turned or looking inwards
