Usage

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections and on talk pages to format quotations from John Stephen Farmer and William Ernest Henley's work Slang and Its Analogues Past and Present (1st edition, 1890–1904, 7 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Volume I (A–Byz). Volume II (C–Fizzle).

Volume III (Fla–Hyps). Volume IV (Ice–My Wig). Volume V (N–Razzle-dazzle).

Volume VI (Rea–Stozzle). Volume VII (Stra–Z).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |1= or |volume= – mandatory: the volume number quoted from in Arabic numerals or uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=1 to |volume=7 or |volume=I to |volume=VII.
• |2=, |chapter=, or |entry= –
  • If quoting from the prefatory note, specify |chapter=Prefatory Note.
  • Otherwise, specify the entry or headword in the work to be quoted from. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry. By default, the template indicates the value assigned to the parameter in small capital letters. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
• |pos= or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end.
• |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
• |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=v–vi.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the work.
• |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
