Usage

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections and on talk pages to cite The Century Dictionary (revised edition, 1914, 5 volumes) edited by William Dwight Whitney and Benjamin Eli Smith. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

• Volume I (A–C).
• Volume II (D–Hoon).
• Volume III (Hoop–O).
• Volume IV (P–Simulant).
• Volume V (Simular–Z).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

Main part

• |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) of the main part of the work cited. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
  • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

You must specify this information to have the template link to an online version of the work.

Supplement

• |supplement= – mandatory: each volume has a part marked "Supplement" at the end. If citing this part of the work, specify |supplement=1 or |supplement=yes.
• |url=, or |3= or |page= – mandatory in some cases: as the supplement is not paginated, you must either:
  • use |url= to specify the URL of the webpage of the online version of the work to be linked to, like this: |url=https://archive.org/details/B-001-002-311/page/n1470/mode/1up; or
  • use |2= or |page= to specify the Internet Archive "page" to be linked to. The actual work is unpaginated, but the Internet Archive has assigned numbers to each page of the work. For example, if the URL of the webpage to be linked to is https://archive.org/details/B-001-002-311/page/n1470/mode/1up, specify |page=1470.

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

Both parts

• |volume= – mandatory in some cases: in most situations the template can automatically determine the volume quoted from. However, the volume number cited from must be specified in uppercase Roman numerals in the following situations:
  • If citing an entry that does not begin with a letter, such as -ent.
  • If an entry starts with either H or S, as such entries are each split over two volumes in the Dictionary. For an entry starting with H you must specify either |volume=II or |volume=III, and for an entry starting with S you must specify either |volume=IV or |volume=V.
• |1= or |entry= – the name of the entry in the Dictionary. If this parameter is not stated, the name of the Wiktionary entry is used.
• |2=, |pos= or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
• |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) cited. Separate the first and last column numbers in a range of columns with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
• |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
