- Many of the Kunlun mountains lie on the northern border of the Plateau of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (Tibet). Although their average elevation is over 20,000 feet (6,100 m), these mountains seem much higher when viewed from the north. From the Tarim Pendi (Tarim Basin) in the north the mountains and the plateau are seen together. Because the basin is below sea level, the mountains seem even taller than they are.
