German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German tanne, from Old High German tanna, from Proto-West Germanic *dannā, from Proto-Germanic *dannǭ, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)dʰonu (“fir”). Per this hypothesis, related to Hittite 𒄑𒋫𒈾𒀀𒌑 (GIŠta-na-a-ú /tanau/, “fir”), Breton tann (“sessile oak”), Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (θanuuarə, “bow”), Sanskrit धनु (dhánu), perhaps Latin femur (“thigh”).
