[edit]Named after Sungei Tampines, a river in the east of Singapore, recorded as R. Tampenus in Lieutenant Philip Jackson's 1828 map of the country. The name of the river is derived from Malay tempinis (“Riau ironwood tree, Streblus elongatus”).
