Possible cognates of German Schloß and Dutch slot How can zámok be cognate with Schloss/slot? According to etymonline, Schloss is cognate with clavus, clavis, claustrum, slot, close, ključ, PIE *klau- ... I don't see an m or final k there. Calque, not cognate. zámok is a calque of Middle High German sloz ‎(“lock, keep”) (possibly via Czech zámek). Middle High German sloz is a calque of Latin clūsa ‎(“lock, fort, fortification”). —Stephen (Talk) 19:40, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
