telephone

[edit]

@-sche: I’ve never heard of this language before, but it sounds like something that hunter-gatherers speak. I’m surprised to see this sense. --Romanophile (contributions) 16:42, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why so? Once they encountered telephones, it's logical people would develop a word for them. Historically, post offices in Australia were connected by telephone lines across the countryside, which probably motivates the semantic development (as the reference says) and might explain the non-use of a loan, if speakers encountered the lines before, or more often than, they encountered English speakers using and providing the name of the telephones. - -sche (discuss) 19:07, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
