This seems to be an obsolete term for various creatures: Chambers 1908 says it is the bar-tailed godwit; other sources say it is the oystercatcher, or even a kind of mullet (fish, not bird! because of the comparable excellence of the meat). Equinox ◑ 10:22, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
