There is a subtle distinction between rub and wipe that I haven't quite captured.
- Rubbing suggests friction; wiping suggests pressing something hard against a surface (e.g. cloth on window) and pushing it in a direction, usually with the result of smearing a substance on something, or cleaning it off. Equinox ◑ 09:59, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
question
[edit]Is there any other meaning for wipe in the computer or image processing area?
Possible missing verb sense
[edit]Chambers 1908 has "(transitive, colloquial) to beat". This would fit with our existing obsolete slang noun sense "a blow or swipe". Unfortunately it's hard to search for examples that aren't "wipe out" etc. Perhaps old boxing magazines? Equinox ◑ 10:03, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
