Talk:wikipedia
Add topicThe following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).
It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.
This has been deleted a few times, but at Wikipedia#English it is listed as an alternate form of "Wikipedia". Therefore this should be undeleted, and created as a {{alternative form of}}
for Wikipedia. That would also solve the problem of any other project linking to the lowercase form on Wiktionary.

- Agreed. If I were not at school forced to use my IPhone's data, I'd recreate the entry myself. PseudoSkull (talk) 18:45, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- "wikipedia" is a capitalisation error, isn't it? I don't think it should be given legitimacy as an alternative form. Mihia (talk) 20:51, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- Remove as a link from Wikipedia as an error not an alternative form. Wikipedia isn't a common noun under any capitalization, it's a countable proper noun like Pepsi or Nissan. Renard Migrant (talk) 21:25, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- English: n. A wiki or similar collaborative database.
- wouldn't the sense for a generic wiki-based online encyclopedia use "wikipedia" in the lower case form? -- 65.94.171.217 11:51, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- I don't think so. As far I am aware, "Wikipedia" or (wrong) "wikipedia" always means *.wikipedia.org, not any old wiki-based encyclopedia. Mihia (talk) 18:05, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- The sense is already attested in the entry Wikipedia#Noun, so if you don't think so, you should RFV the sense (I verbatim copied the definition here and placed it light blue) -- 65.94.171.217 05:14, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
- All those cited examples seem to me to be talking about something like Wikipedia. I do not believe that they are true generic uses. Mihia (talk) 13:46, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

- Keep (undelete). There are lots of hits on Google Ngram. SemperBlotto (talk) 06:35, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

- An annoying feature of Google Ngram is that you can't click on a year and see the actual instances. SemperBlotto (talk) 06:48, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- You should be able to specify (say, for example) from 2006 to 2006 on Google Books. Renard Migrant (talk) 13:21, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

- There is no reason for an undeletion discussion. This entry has never existed as anything other than vandalism. Just create the entry. --WikiTiki89 14:44, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Now a verb
[edit]Used as verb by a Trump supporter, as reported in The Guardian:
- Meyers, Ethan (20 July 2024). "Trump's return to rally stage met with prayers, excitement and confusion over JD Vance". The Guardian. London, United Kingdom. ISSN[0261-3077. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/jul/20/trump-vance-michigan-rally
Here is the quote (but not sure why The Guardian subs did not downcase "Wikipedia") (emphasis added):
“I’ll support him [JD Vance] because Trump supports him,” Betsy Gatchell Goff said. Isaiah White admitted: “Honestly, I had to Wikipedia him, but he seems all right.”

- @RobbieIanMorrison: See Wikipedia § Verb; I have added the quotation. J3133 (talk) 11:33, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- @J3133:: Many thanks. I was a bit puzzled that this appeared to be new usage. But I thought verbs were always lower-case. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:08, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
