Etymology

Rather than from a non-existent Proto-Germanic *wannaz (“dark, swart”), the root of Old English WANN and WONN is akin to the Proto-Brittonic root of Cornish GUNYS [for GWONIS] (work), as a result of fatigue and labour affecting the countenance.
