@Lbdñk The Khmer spelling was wrong, it had Thai characters at the end. The correct Khmer spelling of the descendent is ឧបជ្ឈាយ៍ (ʼupacchiə). I've fixed it here. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 06:50, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Cognate / derived?
[edit]Why does this say 'cognate with' the Sanskrit word rather than derived from it? Dyḗwsuh₃nus (talk) 23:02, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
The direction of transmission may be unclear. What rules out a borrowing from Pali to Sanskrit? --RichardW57 (talk) 11:28, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- The sound changes. jjh > dhy seems impossible. Whereas 'adhi' is known to be derived from PIE, alongside the 2 other elements. Don't you think? Dyḗwsuh₃nus (talk) 11:38, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Loans form Prakrit into Sanskrit are often accompanied by Sanskritisation, so an assimilatory development such as dhy > jjh would be reversed. This is especially so if the compounding were discernible, as it is in this case. A give-away is when the reversal is overdone, resulting in hyper-Sanskritisation. --RichardW57 (talk) 14:42, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
