I extended it from visual ugly, to ugly to the ear, or sensibiltiies. - a sound can be ugly - an incident can be ugly, even if not seen or heard - an ugly customer = an unpleasant person in temper, behaviour --Richardb 12:44, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

If you are to have a picture showing beauty, it only makes sense to have a picture showing ugliness, such as "The Grotesque Old Woman" by Quinten Massys. -Paul, 6 Jan 2009

ugly as a noun?

[edit]

I don't think so. We can't included every weird colloquial usage from a song lyric. (Though Bad Romance is still an awesome song... but that's not the point.) Tooironic 14:49, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is used quite commonly. I would search for some citations on Google Books, but you can't filter out all the adjective usages. Cdhaptomos 20:39, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
What about in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Isn't that ugly used as a noun? 2.97.165.90 10:52, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
No just an adjective used with 'the'. However, isn't uglies a word? Albeit an informal one. --Mglovesfun (talk) 11:03, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
How is "...and the Ugly" an adjective? It's preceded by THE, which is used for nouns only!
Not always true. Consider: "Do you want the red paint or the green paint?" "The red." (Yes, red can be a noun, but here it is an echo of the adjective.) Equinox 11:19, 14 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Etymology for "Ugly"

[edit]

Someone needs to refer this page to the word "ug" which is the noun form of "ugly".

A sense I once encountered at work

[edit]

I worked in logistics software some years ago, and at least one carrier (perhaps only them, but I have no idea) referred to goods to be shipped as "ugly", or "uglies" (plural), if they weren't a nice stackable shape that you could easily load onto a truck, but were some kind of annoying shape that was awkward to deal with.
