A guardian or protector but not in the more specific second sense of a spirit or deity. The given Batman example sounds silly/unlikely. My Books search only found the spirit/deity sense. Equinox ◑ 19:34, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm inclined to agree. All the examples cited in OED relate to the deity or spirit sense. — SMUconlaw (talk) 19:56, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
