Talk:tumult

The pronunciation given for this word does *not* match the primary accepted pronunciation given in other sources (OED, mw, dictionary.com cribs, &c.), which gives the first vowel as "u", or alternatively the palatalised "ju", as in a British context. In fact, in some sources, the pronunciation listed here (with the first vowel as "ʌ") is not even listed as an alternative!

I am hesitant to do any editing of the entry myself, as I am unfamiliar with wiktionary conventions, and as further, there is already an audio file listed for the pronunciation given in the article. I simply desired to bring the issue of the attention of more experienced editors, who I presume might choose to update the article with the pronunciation featuring "u" as the first vowel as the primary pronunciation, follow essentially every other English dictionary source, while keeping the current pronunciation as an acceptable alternative.

It may also be beneficial to provide an audio example for the new pronunciation when the page is updated, if possible. Thank you in advance for your attention to this issue!70.113.16.249 06:39, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

That is interesting. I checked Chambers and indeed it only has the "chew-mult" pronunciation. I'd only ever heard the "tum" one. Presumably this also goes for tumultuous, tumultuate, etc. Equinox ◑ 12:25, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

I've only heard the "too-mult" version. As for tumultuous, tumultuate, etc., the first vowel tends to get reduced to a schwa like many vowels before the stress in multi-syllabic words. Chuck Entz (talk) 02:17, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
