Extended meaning and use of "trusty"

"trusty" as a prison person is actually ironic: it implies that the person is, in fact, a traitor (to the group in jail). There needs to be an additional definition, I'm not quite sure how to label it... I couldn't find this in any dictionary, but it's definitely used that way, even then outside of prison contexts. So for example, in speaking of a reputed mobster one might refer to his "trusties" as being his in-group who "take care of things". Thanks for help with this.
