Etymology

[edit]

No, "trichotomy" cannot derive from τρίχα "hair (acc.)". Otherwise it would mean "haircut".

It must rather be analogous from "dichotomy", where "dicho-" means "apart". However, the whole word was reinterpreted as "di-chotomy" with "di- ~ dy-" meaning "two".

Unfortunately, I haven't found a reference for the etymology. Please add one if you can.

Thanks.
