Pronunciation

[edit]

According to the LPD,

Before l (e.g., transˈliterate) and an unstressed vowel sound (e.g., ˈtransit), /s/ is usual. Before other consonants or a stressed vowel sound (e.g., transˈact), AmE prefers /s/. This also applies in any word where the prefix is felt as separate (e.g., ˌtransˌcontiˈnental). The final consonant is often lost before any /s/ at the beginning of a stem (e.g., in transcribe).
