Actual usage

Although it is undoubtedly attested in Internet forums and pop linguistic articles and such, I still have some doubts about its actual usage. In the region where the compound with equivalent elements is used, the morpheme for "knee" usually (always?) has the unlowered /u/ instead of the "mainstream" lowered /o/, so I wonder whether this particular form is just an attempt to write down an "idealized" or "mainstream"-ized form, and does not enjoy actual usage in real life.
