When did this word enter into common usage?
It appears frequently in US patent applications starting in the 1880s[1]... difficult to find any indication of use prior to 1850. -- Visviva 09:52, 24 September 2007 (UTC)- Actually the first legitimate hits in Google Patents come from the 1920s, and from applications filed by British inventors (like this one)... originally a Briticism? -- Visviva 10:13, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
