which is better there is a lot of immigrants or there are a lot of immigrants?????
- As I recall, British English prefers to use singular verb inflections for groups and American English prefers plural, so the first option would be the British preference, while the second option would be the American preference. The second certainly sounds better to my American ears. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 02:07, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have to confess I use both interchangeably! When I started learning English, I was taught to use the former, but later on I started to pick up the latter from American soap operas. So both are acceptable in my opinion. Jamesjiao → T ◊ C 06:10, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
