Can someone document when this phrase came into being? — This comment was unsigned.

We can find use of the phrase in reported dialogue for quite some time. It seems to have gradually become a catch phrase. I doubt that one can find any particular point when it was first used as an exclamation. Perhaps one could find when it was first used on television, but that wouldn't be the first use in that way.
