I think that the second definition given, although it may reflect common (ignorant) practice is regrettable. The much simpler word 'third' covers this second use of tertile perfectly. On the other hand there is no simple English word to covered the two boundaries of a distribution that divide it in three. Tertile is best reserved to describe this. (anon)
