Etymology

@Equinox It seems to be a partial calque of Japanese 鉄砲蝦, with the "teppo" part from the first part of the word, 鉄砲. What its significance is I don't know, but at least it's something. —CodeCat 23:13, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

The Japanese term is literally "gun + shrimp", referencing the loud snapping sound that it makes, in the same vein as English "pistol shrimp". The "teppo" part is redundantly added onto the "snapping" part to specify the Japanese species, like "nashi pear", which literally is "pear + pear". Nibiko (talk) 04:40, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
