- The OED says (of the English usage) "Originally local northern English, now generally used by geologists and geographers" - I think it is only used in the North-West (in the Lake District). SemperBlotto (talk) 15:52, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, it seems that it is also a geological term related to cirques, and not at all restricted to lakes in Northern England (or Montana). – Jberkel 16:07, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
