Talk:tamborim
Where to write the information about a word which has no translation?
[edit]Recently, I was playing with things related to musical instruments. In my daily routines, I commonly deal with 3 languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish. The first is my mother language. I have a very good knowledge of English, and I like to eventually contribute to Wiktionary in English or Portuguese languages.
Today, I tried to find the English name for the instrument named tamborim. This instrument name appears in the lyrics of the song "Segure tudo", written and composed by Martinho da Vila. I wanted to translated it to Spanish, for a person which seemed to have confused a few words in the song. Portuguese and Spanish are two languages much similar, but there are some quite common false cognates with different meanings. For my surprise, I did not find this instrument having a name in either English and Spanish.
But there is a common confusion (a false cognate) with the instrument tambourine, which is a different instrument: pandeiro. So, I wanted to add a translation entry, in English Wiktionary, in the Portuguese section, that says the instrument is not translated in English. So, we have to write it exactly the same, and using Italic font, if possible (or a note, I guess, in other places). The tamborim has African and Brasilian origin. I do not know details about the African details of it, though. This is something that another person may add.
The English Wikipedia has an article which seems a translated copy for the current (small, simple) article in PT Wikipédia for tamborim mentions the confusion with tamborim+tambourine names.
There are 2 references for the information I said:

- I added a usage note, please check it and feel free to edit or add to it. I'm not sure what other change you want to make here. The entry already indicates that "tamborim" is an English word for a specific kind of instrument, directly borrowed from Portuguese. 98.170.164.88 08:32, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
