Etymology - isn't the etymology rather from the Greek ταχος (tachos) and μετρειν (metrein)? The etymology on this page looks incredibly silly. 178.255.168.24 07:43, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Quite possibly. But as a modern coinage used in the same industry as the obviously non-Greek speedometer and tripometer, its possible that the creators of the word were unaware of ταχος and just wanted the rhyme. Note that tachymeter exists and probably predates the coinage of tachometer. We did the same thing with bathymeter vs bathometer. (Although tripometer is a redlink here, it's easy enough to turn up, and may be an old-fashioned term that has more recently been driven out by trip meter and "trip odometer".)
