Our definition isn't bad, but I really like the anatomical dispassion of Chambers 1908: "sob, v.i. to sigh in a convulsive manner, with tears: to weep with convulsive catchings of the breath, due to contractions of the diaphragm, accompanied by a closure of the glottis, preventing the entrance of air into the lungs."
