Our definition isn't bad, but I really like the anatomical dispassion of Chambers 1908: "sob, v.i. to sigh in a convulsive manner, with tears: to weep with convulsive catchings of the breath, due to contractions of the diaphragm, accompanied by a closure of the glottis, preventing the entrance of air into the lungs." - You could not get citations for that outside of medical literature, which means it is not how ordinary humans think of it. DCDuring (talk) 15:13, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- Surely every romantic heroine sobbing in a novel is a citation for this! Equinox ◑ 15:37, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
