Tagalog Etymology

[edit]

@Ysrael214 What's the source for this etymology? I'm thinking that it's more probably that it was borrowed directly from Malay, and ultimately from Sanskrit. Mar vin kaiser (talk) 07:05, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Mar vin kaiser Possibly, but I'm thinking there has to be a prefix "si-" (or maybe "sing-") that is cognate to the Malay one to make sense of terms like "simuno", "magsi-<verb>", "pani- (pang+si-)", "katulad"/"kasingtulad". Ysrael214 (talk) 11:46, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ysrael214: So what's the source that you used? --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 14:26, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser No proper source aside from Malay se- has the same use as sing- is. Anyway, this can just be interpreted as some "si-" attached to mula. The mula root is confirmed by Diccionario Tagalog-Hispano. But sure you can change it to a borrowing. An alternate form in Vocabulario de la lengua Tagala is sa mula (with space though). @Mar vin kaiser Potet says si- involves sa + i- (directional prefix, like ibabaw) on his Tagalog Borrowings and Cognates. Search for *sa-i-muláq. Ysrael214 (talk) 23:01, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
