LOL okay well, i was looking for the slang version of SHORTY as in when you are refered to as shorty, when you are not actually short, for example, when alot of the hip-hop or rap singers call someone, or there girlfriend a shorty.
If people use shorty in this way and you can define it clearly, go ahead and add it. What is the social connotation when it is used this way? Is it a term or endearment, a put-down or both? Is it used in a contrafactual way (i.e. for a tall person)? Brholden 23:12, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not the contributor who posted the earlier paragraph, but I am very familiar this usage: shorty (also spelled shortie) is not quite a put-down, but usually an affectionate term with playful, sexist undertones (it originates from the female often being smaller than the man; even the comparison to an adolescent is sometimes implicit). However, affection is not always implied; and possibly, some women/girls would take offense at the term (especially if they are outside of the culture). Alexander 007 23:26, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- The term shorty/shortie, within the same culture, is also (less often) used to refer to kids, children, or youngsters, regardless of gender. In fact, the term is even applied to grown males sometimes, regardless of height, but that's not as common :-) And it is sometimes used in a contrafactual way, but that's not the main gist.
