Rfv-sense: To take a risk which may result in great rewards; to succeed after taking such a risk.

The citation offered can't support "take a risk" because meaning is conveyed by "try to" (?"try to take great risks"). "To succeed after taking such a risk" is largely repetitive of the previous, figurative sense "attain great heights [etc]". DCDuring TALK 15:29, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Leave without paying the rent

‘Shooting the moon’ means leaving without paying the rent, i.e. running away from one’s debtors. — This comment was unsigned.

Apparently so. John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) has: "Shoot the moon, to remove furniture from a house in the night without paying the landlord." Equinox ◑ 18:44, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
